ASMR Announces New Phase of Operations

WASHINGTON, DC, December 12, 2005 -- ASM Resources, Inc. (ASMR), the for-profit venture arm of the American Society of Microbiology, announced today a strategic realignment of its mission to focus primarily on managing its existing portfolio of high-technology companies.

Since its establishment in 2000, ASMR has been devoted to investing in and supporting startups through seed capital and business development assistance. In fulfilling that mission, the organization has invested a total of $2.1M in nine early-stage companies in the bioscience and health care-related industries. As part of its strategy shift, ASMR has elected to discontinue the organization's education and training offerings for the entrepreneurial bioscience community and to redeploy those resources to the portfolio companies. These changes have also enabled ASMR to scale back staffing and overhead.

"While ASMR is no longer seeking new investments or offering programs, it continues to operate under the active direction of its board of directors and remains fully committed to supporting its diversified portfolio of bioscience- and health care-related companies," said Laurence McCarthy, PhD, chair of the ASMR Board of Directors and Chief Technology Officer of Focus Diagnostics.
